How to Apply for a State Farm Good Neighbor Scholarship

The Good Neighbor Scholarship Program is a national award program that provides financial assistance to low-income households in the United States. The scholarship is intended to help people who cannot pay for basic expenses such as food, housing, and transportation. The Good Neighbor Scholarship Program is run by two organizations, The Good Neighbor Association and The Good Neighbor Foundation. Both organizations were founded in 1954 by Leo P. Lyberg to help homeless people living on the street or in shelters. Later, the charity changed its name to The Good Neighbor Foundation and became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2011.

An associate dean created the Good Neighbor Scholarship Program at the Cooper Union School of Architecture, LeRoy Neiman, in 1954. Mr. Neiman had hounded the New York City Department of Welfare to find a solution for homeless people in New York City who could not pay rent and shelter fees since they had no other source of income.

He began a campaign that raised $100,000 for the scholarships at a single meeting. In 1987, he asked the Cooper Union School of Architecture to award scholarships to 30 students from New York City who were homeless. They are funded by the School and administered by social service agencies and local governments. The School was founded in 1880 as a private college for students who were Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. It was known as the School of Architecture and Design until it merged with Columbia University in 1983. Mr. Neiman has received awards for his academic research and teaching, including the American Institute of Architects’ Louis Mies Van der Rohe Award for Excellence in Teaching (2002), a prestigious honor given to exceptional teachers not only in architecture but also in other fields.

He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 2009 and is the recipient of several honorary degrees, including an honorary Doctorate from Cooper Union. in 1987 and the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honor for outstanding contributions to the country.”…a significant contribution to the field of architectural education.” Named one of America’s top 100 architects by the American Institute of Architects, Nieman is also the author of several books, including “The Architecture of the Future” (1965) and “The Case for Contemporary Architecture” (1971), which describes a utopian future in which architecture would be more democratic, socially responsible, and environmentally friendly.

In this book, he calls for the use of young architects interested in “servicing society rather than making money.”…this is the best book I have ever read on architecture. It has more to say than most professional books on architecture. …This is a genuinely monumental book. It will be necessary for years to come, and its influence on architectural education could not be more significant.

It is a book to be read by all architects, not just those with Ph.D.’s.” –Thomas B. Tulen, Architectural Record “A truly monumental theoretical and practical work of epoch-making significance.” –J.W.E. Collins Jr., Journal of the American Institute of Architects “The author makes a convincing case for the importance of the book and its latest edition.” –American Institute of Architects “An essential addition to the architectural literature.” –Journal of Design History” As a textbook in architecture, this work is an invaluable resource. It is so detailed that all architects can use it, including those who are not practicing architects.” –J.W.E. Collins Jr., Architectural Record “The book is a historical reference work and a national repository of the most significant theoretical and practical architectural knowledge. It provides excellent ammunition for all architects.

“–J.W.E. Collins Jr., Journal of the American Institute of Architects” The AIA has been the foundation for teaching architecture at the university level for more than a century, and this book provides an exhaustive, comprehensive, and authoritative text that will be an invaluable reference tool for all of us.” –John H. Crouch, Professor Emeritus, University of Washington “This book gets right to the heart of how architecture is made and how it should be practiced.
